Mission Committee

Purpose

The Mission Interpretation Committee is called to discern the mission work of the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown as it pertains to our work in the community, both locally and world-wide.

Accountability

The Mission Interpretation Committee (MIC) is accountable to the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, Ohio and ultimately accountable to our Triune God whom we serve with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Responsibilities

The MIC is tasked with overseeing and interpreting to the congregation the direct and indirect ministries of the church. Both direct ministries (such as our work at Gutknecht Towers) and indirect ministries (such as those of the service agencies which we support with our donations) are the works of our corporate body. The MIC also recognizes the individual efforts of members who volunteer and support financially a host of other efforts which contribute to bringing about the Kingdom of God.

Specifically, in direct ministries, the work of MIC consists of but is not limited to:

  • Oversee the ministries at Gutknecht Towers, arranging for volunteers for food preparation, helping with the day of the ministry and providing for all areas of this important ministry;
  • Oversee the ministries with our partnership with Williamson Schools, arranging for the book drive for Christmas, caring for the students, teachers and administration as we continue to develop different avenues to do so.

Specifically, in indirect ministries, the work of MIC consists of but is not limited to:

  • Gathering information for our yearly donations;
  • Reporting to the congregation of the work the denomination and other ministry communities are doing in regards to mission;
  • Encouraging support of the PC(USA) mission efforts and offerings.

Committee Members

The MIC consists of a Ruling Elder, who is the Session Liaison, members of the congregation at large, and the Pastor who is an ex-officio member. The chair of the committee is appointed for one year by the Pastor, confirmed by the Committee and approved by the Session. The committee consists of a minimum of 8 to 10 members. A quorum is 50% of the current membership.

To serve on this committee is to be at the heart of where our corporate faith meets the world for which Jesus gave His life and ministry. Our mission- along with our public worship- is the witness to our faith.

Meetings

Meetings are held by agreement of the members, generally every month. Meetings at the church are scheduled with the Administrative Assistant who also sends a postcard reminder one week ahead of the meeting time. All meetings begin and end with prayer by one of the members or the Pastor.
